Quick. What’s your favorite thing about Full Moon Bar-B-Que? Besides, of course, the fantastic ‘que? (BTW, I like my Full Moon pork sandwiches “sliced with a little bit of the outside.”)
Some might say it’s the famous chow-chow or the vinegar-based slaw that is one of the 100 Things to Eat in Alabama or the Half Moon cookies, also on that list of Things to Eat.
But I’m going to say it’s the quiet giving back. The company’s community spirit. Namely the “Backpack Blessings.”

Each year, Joe and David Maluff, the brothers who own Full Moon Bar-B-Que, provide food, supplies—and hope—to children in Alabama and Mississippi through anonymous nominations. Each recipient receives a Nike backpack filled with a Full Moon gift card, a Walmart gift card and an array of school supplies (totaling a value of $200).
Full Moon Bar-B-Que is accepting nominations through an online nomination form through Sunday, July 16th.

“We started Backpack Blessings back in 2020 and it has been an initiative near and dear to our hearts ever since,” says Joe Maluff. “This fourth year is extra special because we are giving out more Backpack Blessings than we ever have before.” This time, 150 recipients will receive a Backpack Blessing just in time for the beginning the school year.
(The backpacks will be available for pick up at the Full Moon location indicated on the nomination form.)
“This is a tradition that the entire Full Moon Bar-B-Que team looks forward to every year,” says David Maluff. “Every child deserves the opportunity to start their school year off prepared and confident. We’re thankful to have the resources and abilities to provide the children of Alabama and Mississippi with the tools they need to succeed.”
To nominate a deserving child in the state of Alabama or Mississippi, please visit the online entry form and complete the confidential nomination with detailed and specific information explaining why your nominee is deserving of a “Backpack Blessing.”

Full Moon Bar-B-Que has been in operation since 1986. The Maluff brothers, David and Joe, have grown the business while continuing a family-owned tradition that caters to folks who know great ‘que from the rest.
